NWN Provides Free Screening During Diabetes Awareness Month
In 2019, 55 million adults are living with diabetes in the MENA region, of which 45% are undiagnosed. This figure is estimated to increase to 108 million by 2045. People with diabetes are at increased risk of developing cardiovascular diseases (CVD) <https://www.idf.org/cvd> and other chronic diseases that can lead to death. Prevention, regular screening, early detection and treatment are the best ways to avoid diabetes and its complications.
On the occasion of the Diabetes Awareness Month, the National Wellness Network (NWN) launched a campaign on its different social media platforms throughout the month of November, spreading knowledge about diabetes, its types, symptoms, nutritional therapy and medical treatment. During the last week of November, free diabetes screening was provided to all NWN visitors in Aley, Spears and Damour and artificial sweeteners, sugar-free juices and healthy snacks were distributed.
Although genetic factors have a solid effect on diabetes, it can be strongly prevented by addressing some risk factors including: obesity, sedentary lifestyle, smoking, alcohol abuse and unhealthy diets. A successful lifestyle shift is reachable with the consolidation of efforts of the patient, their family and healthcare service providers such as NWN.
